I was mucking around with Audacity, listening to songs in reverse. For the fun of it, I put on everyone’s favorite song, Blurred Lines. And shockingly, I heard something I had never expected to hear. Robin Thicke was fooling us this whole time. He wasn’t trying to be misogynistic, he wanted us to listen closer to the song and understand that he in fact does believe his lady partner needs to be treated with the utmost respect.
You might find it VERY hard to believe, but I implore you to listen very closely (with headphones if you can, because it can be hard to hear). The message I’m talking about comes in around the 30 second mark.
After the 30sec mark I just kind of stared at my wall for the rest of the song trying to accept what I just heard.
"The main thing you can change is how you perceive yourself. Stop looking in the mirror and realize that you’re living for yourself, not other people … I have belly fat like everybody else, and I don’t want to be airbrushed on the cover of a magazine. I don’t want someone to swap out my stomach with a supermodel. I don’t want dirty old men looking at me in my underwear."
my mom just stopped me from doing my homework to talk about matthew mcconaughey
"Children are required to be in school, where their freedom is greatly restricted, far more than most adults would tolerate in their workplaces. In recent decades we’ve been compelling them to spend ever more time in this kind of setting, and there’s strong evidence that this is causing psychological damage to many of them. And as scientists have investigated how children naturally learn, they’ve realized that kids do so most deeply and fully, and with greatest enthusiasm, in conditions that are almost opposite to those of school….
Most people assume that the basic design of today’s schools emerged from scientific evidence about how children learn. But nothing could be further from the truth.
Schools as we know them today are a product of history, not research.
Research has shown that people of all ages learn best when they are self-motivated, pursuing answers to questions that reflect their personal interests and achieving goals that they’ve set for themselves. Under such conditions, learning is usually joyful.
The evidence for all of this is obvious to anyone who’s watched a child grow from infancy to school age. Through their own efforts, children figure out how to walk, run, jump, and climb. They learn from scratch their native language, and with that, they learn to assert their will, argue, amuse, annoy, befriend, charm, and ask questions.
They do all of this before anyone, in any systematic way, tries to teach them anything.
This amazing drive and capacity to learn does not turn itself off when children reach five or six. But we turn it off with our coercive system of schooling.”
Public schooling, at least in America, was started around the time of the Industrial Revolution, and was a preparation for factory work when kids got old enough. That’s why the hours are as long as they are and every public school seems to run on the same shitty system that only provides bare minimum education. It taught basic literacy and work ethics to children who could then grow up and be decent employees. The school system wasn’t designed for learning and teaching, it was designed as job preparation.
I had so much trouble reading this because it takes me back to highschool and elementary school and I found myself staring at the ceiling for twenty minutes trying not to cry.
School killed my urge to learn, read, explore, and whatever self-confidence I had as a blissfully ignorant child.
The worst part of this to me is that these problems -aren’t- unsolvable. They aren’t at all! Other countries have already experimented with alternative forms of teaching for young children and highschoolers with great success! Look at Finland for fuck’s sake!
It’s not an unsolvable issue! People are just too fucking lazy to try and FIX IT.
another major flaw in the american public teaching system-
the teachers who dont make the cut don’t get fired, instead they get put on the board of education for their district.
we literally put those who aren’t capable of effectively teaching into positions in charge of those who can teach effectively.

at my funeral there is going to be a closed casket and then it will be opened to reveal that i am not inside. instead, they will turn on the ceiling fan and my lifeless body will swing around the room while the space jam theme song is playing in the background.
nevermind, my mom says i can’t do that.
